Study opportunities
A general directory of research types
Studies come in many forms. Learn what each type usually involves and what to ask, so you can discover opportunities that fit your life. This directory is general and does not list or guarantee any specific study.
Healthy Volunteer Research
Studies that invite people without the condition being studied to help researchers learn how something works in a general population.
Prep tip: Think about your weekly schedule and how far you are comfortable traveling for visits.
Observational Research
Studies where researchers watch and record information over time without assigning a specific product or activity.
Prep tip: Ask how long the observation period lasts and how information is collected.
Interventional Research
Studies where volunteers are assigned an activity, product, or approach so researchers can compare results.
Prep tip: Ask what the study team will ask you to do, and how often, before your first conversation ends.
Prevention Research
Studies that look at ways to lower the chance of a condition developing in the first place.
Prep tip: Ask how long follow-up lasts, since prevention studies can run over longer periods.
Behavioral Research
Studies that explore habits, routines, sleep, activity, or learning, often through surveys or sessions.
Prep tip: Ask whether sessions are in person, remote, or a mix of both.
Device Research
Studies that explore how a tool, wearable, or piece of equipment works in everyday use.
Prep tip: Ask how the device is used day to day and who to contact with questions.
